Learning for YOU – Recent training with Avanti Destinations, AmaWaterways and Tourism Switzerland

One Smart Cookie - from the internet

One Smart Cookie – from the internet

Last week I was blessed to have been able to take part in three great training webinars that were both informative and exciting.  I hope that you will find something that you will enjoy!

My first training last week was with a company that I’ve used for about 15 years – Avanti Destinations.

Avanti Destinations is headquartered in Portland, Oregon and has been helping travel agents design customized trips to Europe and Latin America for about 30 years.  They hand pick their properties and are able to offer boutique hotels, castles, and manor houses that offer both ambiance and charm.  Because they also offer cooking classes, wine and cuisine tours and driving tours along with the normal “sight-seeing” options, they are able to offer truly authentic experiences that are fund and rewarding.

The training was on France -the different regions and the types of wines that are offered in each.  I was able to learn a little bit more about the Route des vins which covers about 100 miles and meanders through 67 small towns and villages between Strasburg and Colmar in the Alsace region. strasburg from loney planet

To give you an idea of an itinerary that we could add on to a customized trip for you might be:

3 days/2 nights: Spend two nights in an historic château along the Route des Vins in Alsace.  We suggest starting or ending your tour in Strasbourg, the crossroads of Europe, known for half-timbered houses, winestubs and its famous cathedral.

route des vins

Package Includes:  2 nights 4star château near Colmar  - Welcome bottle of the château’s wine – Wine tasting and a 4-course Alsatian dinner at the château – Alsatian wine road tour with visit and tasting at a local cellar – 3-day economy manual car rental – Daily breakfast

Cost per person starts at $645 per person

The second training was offered by Tourism Switzerland and is one in a series that they have been offering.

Swiss rail

I’ve had a great time participating in this one.  The photos that they show, along with the great information for my clients, keep me totally engaged!

They have been sharing with us about all of the different train experiences available, and I can say from experience last year, that the trains in Switzerland are a wonderfully relaxing way to travel!

Switzerland Rail

They offer the Chocolate Train with is a day trip with tours to Swiss Chocolatiers included…how wonderful is that?  If chocolate isn’t your thing, then you might do Schilthorn – a train experience called The Footsteps of James Bond.

casino royal

If you are interested in a real Once-in-a-lifetime experience, you might consider an adventure that would allow you to ride up front…way up front in the Driver’s Cabin with the train engineer!  Yes, it’s possible…it must be booked in advance and is very limited.

The third training that I participated in last week was another in a series from AmaWaterways River Cruises and was conducted by their president, Mr. Gary Murphy.

Mr. Murphy shared with us about their very popular wine themed river cruises in Europe which are now up to 23 different sailings offered either in the Spring or Fall each year!

Wine Tasting on AmaWaterways River Cruise

Wine Tasting on AmaWaterways River Cruise

The rivers in Europe are an ideal way to enjoy wine tastings since the local wineries were established right on the rivers due to a pure water source, as well as a convenient way to transport both the grapes and the finished wine to other towns and villages up or down river.

Celeb_main_img

On these wine cruises, they have a host from a U.S. winery who will bring some of their wineries’ finest to share for tastings and pairings onboard the ship.  They will then lead tastings and pairings of some of local European wines.

The wonderful thing about these wine themed cruises is that there is no extra cost to participate…it’s included in the regular price of the River Cruise!  Now that’s a wonderful added value!

Please contact me today if you would like to know more!

Hotel Choices: To Choose International Chain Hotel or A Local Establishment?

I’ve just read an article from Rick Steves, the guru of European Travel, that sang the praises of smaller local establishments for both access to the local people and their culture as well as offering a  savings to your pocket book.  As usual, there are many things that I agree with Mr. Steves  on, but as a Travel ADVISOR to my clients, I have a great responsibility to them and that gives me slightly different insight.

Mr. Steves is a very respected, experienced and savvy traveler!  I love to read his articles as well as watch his shows when I can.  He is very comfortable with Europe and moves from one town and village to the other with ease.  But not all of us who are traveling to Europe are on his level!

In this article Mr. Steves raises many good points, and one is the availability of travel information online as well as the fallibility of trusting TripAdvisor Reviews.  He shares that sometimes hotels incentives guests to give them glowing reviews by offering a free breakfast….one the other hand, there are some not so nice guests who will black-mail hotels – squeezing them for better rates and perks with the threat of bad reviews.

I often tell clients to toss out the over-the-top glowing reviews as well as the blistering, can’t-say-anything-good reviews on TripAdvisor. Some people will never be happy no matter what, and you could poke others in the eye with a stick and they would still be smiling. Over the years I’ve seemed to have the best luck that way.

Another portion of this article that I whole heartily agree with is finding a hotel accommodation that will give you a sense of “place”…basically letting you know where you are when you open your eyes in the morning.

My last trip to Paris I decided to stay at a large business hotel with other people I was traveling with. When I woke up the next morning, it was the hotel chain that I recognized…not my destination. It certainly wasn’t any better when I threw open the curtains to find I over looked the air conditioning units on the top of the hotel. – Bummer!

bad view 2

Bad view from a hotel – not my actual Paris room, but you see what I mean -

Eiffel Tower       This is what I would have loved to have seen instead

    Villa Le Maschere in Florence

This WAS my view from a room at the Villa Le Marschere located outside of Florence…that room and view left no doubt in my mind that I was in Italy!

My bad view in Paris showed me that this was another way that I could help my clients – by giving them a more authentic experience!

Now, not too many of my cliensts would be comfortable in the 2 star hotels that Mr. Steves has written about….what we Americans expect in a hotel can vary greatly with what our European cousins offer, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t able to find accommodations that will be charming with a lot of local flavor.

In the end, Mr. Steves and I have similar missions…to share our passion for Europe with you in the hopes that you will want to experience it for yourself

If I can help you in your quest to travel to Europe, won’t you give me a call?  I work mostly over the phone and internet so our locations aren’t a concern.    Thank you!

The 2014 River Cruises in Europe Now Available – Reserve Today For The Best Availability

As a Travel Advisor who loves to travel herself, I’ve always loved cruises!  Let’s face it, once I board a ship, unpack my stuff and settle in, I get to enjoy the good life visting new and exciting places and someone else did the driving.

I can promise you, and my family can testify that when I’m on a vacation, I don’t want to make any decisions.  I do that all day long and love it, but just like everyone else, I want a vacation away from work.  I just want someone to tell me where we are going, what we are doing and tell me how much money they need from me to make it happen.  I just want to show up and have everything taken care of.

Now with that said, it doesn’t mean that I don’t have an opinion of the destination or mode of travel, but once we settle on the main thing, I will let my family and friends decide the details.

Over the years as River Cruises in Europe have come into fashion, they have become one of my VERY favorite ways to vacation.  Much like the Caribbean Cruises, there is the convenience of only unpacking once, and getting pampered on the ship.  But unlike those Caribbean Cruises, there is so much more to a River Cruise in Europe!

There is culture, there is history, there is art, there is music, there is food, there is architecture that is over 1000 years old, as well as old world master craftsmanship….and so much more.  And all of this is accessible to the lucky 160 or so like-minded guests aboard one of the River Cruises that sail in the heart of Europe by way of its rivers!

Gliding down these rivers is one of the most relaxing ways to visit the small old towns that grew up along the rivers of Europe – many times docking within easy walking distance.  Great guided tours that are included will help you get so much enjoyment out of the experience, as well as offering you the chance to get to know your fellow passengers as you enjoy experiences that you wouldn’t have ever done because you just didn’t know they were an option. (Concerts, wine or beer tastings, cheese making or cooking demonstrations)

Yes, I adore a European River Cruise!  But the big ocean going vessels has done us a disservice in one major way…where as you might be able to wait for a ship that holds anywhere from 3500 to 6000 passengers to put unsold space on sell as the sailing gets closer, that IS NOT THE CASE when it comes to River Cruises!

The average number of passengers on a River Cruise ship is 150 to 170.  That means that over the summer they may only be able to accommodate the same number of passengers as ONE sailing of one of those Caribbean Cruise ships can in just one week!

Don’t wait to book because you may very well loose the date, ship or itinerary that is of most interest to you!

Please give me a call today if you’d like to find out more about River Cruising in Europe.

I’m One Smart Cookie – How I Stay On Top of Travel For You

I was looking back at my calendar for the week and wondering what it was that I did all week when I realized that I’m one educated travel advisor!  This week alone I took educational webinar trainings with Rail Europe to find out the latest on train travel in Europe, Tauck Tours regarding their River Cruises in Europe, and Uniworld River Cruises to learn about their Christmas Market Cruises!

Why I'm One Smart Cookie - I take training seriously

Very Cute Picture from the Web

As I looked back at other weeks in schedule, I noticed that last week was not an anomaly…it looks like I take an average of 3 trainings per week to keep up with my specialty – Europe Travel and European River Cruises.

I think that I will beginning sharing a little tid-bit from these trainings from now on since sharing this information with you may help fill a need that you might have, as well as cementing it in my mind!

I hope that you and your families have a wonderful Easter!

A Little Taste of Europe – A Food Tasting and Travel Educational Social Event

Ed Gannon from the Vintage Olive shares during "A Little Taste of Europe"

This past Thursday, March 7th, we hosted the first “A Little Taste of Europe” and I’d call it a success!

If any of you have read any of my posts, or have ever worked with me, you will surely know that I am passionate about all things Europe.  I love it all – the people, the culture, the food, the arts, the music the architecture, the languages, the little towns and villages – I really could go on, but I’m sure you get the picture.

When I first got into the travel industry back in 1993 – 20 years ago now – things were a lot different; let’s face it, the WORLD was a lot different and the way that consumers, (that would be you,) were marketed to was different.  There wasn’t access to the internet, and you couldn’t just Google – Great Vacations to Europe – and get a billion options on a computer screen!   No, there was a lot more face-to-face interaction at store front travel agencies, or at Travel and Cruise Shows.

Nowadays, my customers are much more knowledgeable about travel destinations than they were, but they have also been inundated with too many options…so many in fact that most have begun to wonder what is really best for them.

As I sat there thinking about how much fun I used to have at those old events, I started thinking about how I might be able to help my clients and share my passion.  After looking for a solution with no  luck, I decided to do something about it – and my event, “A Little Taste of Europe” was born!

My goal for this event was this; to share my passion for Europe while helping people, making friends and having fun.  I structured the event as a small group of like-minded people who loved food and travel and wanted to learn a little more about both.

Our first event was held at The Vintage Olive in Montgomery Alabama and featured food pairings that highlighted the use of flavored gourmet Olive Oils and Aged Balsamic Vinegars from around the world, the wine shop next door suggested a wine for our guests to taste.  Our educational component was delivered by Ms. Kathy Brock from AmaWaterWays River Cruises, who shared a presentation on River Cruises available in Europe, (including Russia), Asia and Africa.   She was able to tell about the smaller River Cruise Ships, the itineraries that are available on the Rhine, Seine,   Danube as well as other European Rivers – and those in Russia, on the Mekong and in Africa.

Kathy Brock from AmaWaterways River Cruises shares a pesentation

Our goal was 20 attendees – invites were sent by email, Facebook as well as by postcards delivered by the good ol’ US Postal Service.  We had a few last-minute no-shows, but all in all I was delighted with the attendance.  We had RSVP’s for 13 – 9 people actually made it, not counting me and Kathy Brock, or the owners of The Vintage Olive, Ed and Carley Gannon as well as my husband who made an unexpected appearance. (He came in from out-of-town)

The smaller group and the wonderful food set a comfortable atmosphere that really made personal conversations easy and optimized the sharing of ideas as well as the asking and answering of questions.

Kathy was also able to offer a $100 Gift Card from AmaWaterways for any new River Cruise bookings that were made and deposited by Friday, March 15, 2013.  You need not have been present to take advantage of this special offer!

A Little Taste of Europe is next scheduled to be in Chattanooga TN on Sunday afternoon, May 5th and then in the Atlanta GA area in the fall.  Please feel free to contact me if you’d like an invitation, or if you are interested in having A Little Taste of Europe event near your home.  We are a travel agency after all and can easily get to a town near you!

The Best Time to Book Your International Airline Ticket? – It doesn’t have to be a crap shoot

I’m often asked, “Trish, when should I book my airline ticket?” and most times my answer will surprise people.

I typically tell clients who book their international trips with me, that we should issue their airline tickets when these 3 things line up:

  • We Find A Good Flight Schedule
  • They Are Feel The Airline Ticket is Fairly Priced
  • They Have The Ability To Pay For The Airline Tickets In Full

As soon as the client has their travel dates, they are often eager to go ahead and book their airfare.  But over the years I’ve noticed that many of the best fares don’t become available until about 3 or 4 months in advance.  (Maybe 3 to 6 weeks for domestic airline tickets)

To get started, we will begin checking prices and availability to get a baseline and then we keep an eye on it periodically.  Once we are comfortable with the schedule, price and have the cash to pay, then we issue the airline tickets.

I was curious about what other travel professionals recommended when it came to airline ticket booking windows, so I checked online where I read a report from Kayak.  They advised domestic  airline tickets should be booked exactly 21 days prior, while international airfare should be booked 34 days prior…you can read the article at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/18/the-best-time-to-book-airfare_n_1978346.html.

I must say, that I don’t agree with Kayak’s across the board answer, because there are usually exceptions to any hard and fast rule – case in point; I have a very nice lady who is trying to book her flights for an international trip, but even though she’s within the acceptable window based on the above info, the airfare to her destination is almost completely sold out!

It isn’t ALWAYS about getting the rock bottom airline fares, sometimes it’s the peace of mind knowing that you have your airline tickets secured!  You see, the nice lady’s trip is scheduled to take place over a busy season.

When booking international travel, other country’s holiday schedules might not be top of mind.   Many times people just don’t realize that their destination will be that busy…it’s not always because of a holiday either!  It could be an annual festival, or even a convention.  Just like I’m seeing with my nice lady, the good schedules get booked early, and even the undesirable schedules are priced highly.  Chalk it up to supply and demand.

At this point we aren’t sure that the nice lady and her family will be taking their much desired trip.  Sad but true.

With a little more lead time and my 3 part rule, they could be enjoying that trip!

***Update to story – The Nice Lady is going on her trip!  We where able to tweak her travel dates and find something that worked for her family.  It isn’t exactly what she wanted, but she was happy about the outcome and so am I***

I’d be delighted to help with your international airfares…call me today with your questions!

41 New River Cruise Ships Will Arrive in 2013 – They will book quickly due to high demand

With 41 new river cruise ships being introduced in Europe this year, should we be concerned about overcrowding?   Not according to an interesting article titled, Traffic Control  in a resent copy of Travel Weekly, a newspaper geared toward the travel industry.

In the article written by Michelle Baran, a concern that was voiced was port over- crowding; an issue that has plagued the Deep Water Ocean Cruise Lines for years.  An example of this might happen in the Caribbean for instance, when several cruise ships, (holding 3000 + passengers), all arrive at the same port on the same day.  Ms. Baran correctly points out that because of the smaller size of Europe River Cruise Ships, that even if 5 arrived at the same time, less than 1000 additional people would be in a town or village.

In an effort to prevent port over crowning in small European towns and villages, several of the cruise lines are altering their departure days as well as planning their itineraries to help ease congestion.   I believe that the fact River Cruise vessels have an appointed time to sail through the locks on European Rivers also may help fight traffic jams.

Another important concern Ms. Baran raised was about the number or docs available at a port.  When more than one ship arrives in a town or village, and they only have one or two docks and a few ships arrive on the same day, the practice known as rafting takes place.  Rafting is when one ship is tied to the doc and the other ships tie on to the first one making a floating raft.

When rafting takes place, the rafted vessel’s passenger must board and cross over the first vessel to exit onto shore.  I’ve had this happen a time or two and I took it as an opportunity to check out another cruise lines ship.  (It’s always a good practice to lock your Balcony doors when you leave the ship just in case rafting occurs after you disembark)

Long story short – the extra ships coming onto the rivers won’t negatively affect your upcoming European River Cruise.  You may find that a few more cabins might be available on the river of your choice, but act quickly as they will be surely go quickly!

I’d be delighted to answer any questions that you might have about River Cruising in Europe.  Please feel free to call me today!

International Airline Tickets Can Be a Pain in the Rear – Why Do Them Yourself?

Booking International Airfare doesn't have to be a pain in the rear!

Have you ever tried to book a frequent flyer ticket? What about then trying to match up a second ticket online?  Just when you think you have it and hit the “BUY” button to get a message like, ‘selected flight no longer available” try again…What a headache!

What about trying to find the best airfare going into one city and out of another?  Those round trip tickets that arrive and depart from that same city always look like a better deal, but are they really?  Why back track when you can see new places?

Are you taking a River Cruise or Deep Sea Cruise in Europe and would like to maybe go a few days early or stay a few days late, but the cruise lines air isn’t that flexible.  Do you really want to settle for second best?

You have a multi-generational family trip to Europe, but half the family are coming from other cities ans asked yourself, “How do we co-ordinate and arrive near the same time?  What if we can’t arrive together?”  Working with a group can be like herding cats.

Those are all situations that I deal with every day!

I talk a lot about the customized land tours, multi-generational trips and River Cruises in Europe that I handle, but not everyone knows that I’m also an expert when it comes to booking international airfare!  I love the challenge of multiple points of departure, making airline frequent flyer miles or credit card points work for you and getting a great value for my clients.

As a member of the Virtuoso family, I have access to special contracted rates that the general public will never see; bottom line – I have the tools, skills and experience to get the most bang from your travel dollar – not only on deep sea cruises, River Cruises in Europe, Escorted Motor Coach Tours or Customized Private Tours.

Call Trish Gastineau when you need international airline tickets

It’s Tuesday! Call me!

I’d love to hear from you, so please call me today and let me start helping you put all the pieces of your next European experience into place!
